Decreasing Social Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Effect of Behavioral Intervention on Neural Asymmetry in Frontal Lobe
Journal Title: The 1st Annual Meeting of Georgian Center for Neuroscience Research - Year 2020, Vol 2, Issue 20
Abstract
Background and aims: Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder that impresses on social interaction, communication and stereotyped behavioral patterns. The aims of this study were evaluating the effectiveness of pivotal response on reduction of social problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and investigating the efficacy of this intervention on neural asymmetry of frontal lobe. Method: The research method was a semiexperimental. Seventeen children diagnosed with ASD according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) were received intervention for three months. Behavioral, communicational and social problems and neural asymmetry of the frontal lobe were evaluated in two phases, before treatment and after treatment. Results: Findings showed ABC and CCC scores were decreased in participants after 3 months intervention compared with the scores prior to treatment (p < 0.05). The improvement of social problems, the theory of mind enhancement and changes of gamma band asymmetry found in children with ASD. Conclusions: PRT may have effect in reducing communicational, speech and social problems in children with autism and this improvement was also showed in neural function of the frontal lobe. Therefore, the PRT is recommended for controlling and treating this disorder.
