Defensive behaviors of companies in championship sports in times of crisis – an analysis of selected case studies

Abstract

The paper presents the findings of the author’s own research on typical behavior of professionalsports clubs in crisis situations. The research covered more than 160 companies in Poland runningactivities in team sports, mainly including football, basketball, volleyball, speedway and icehockey. The paper presents selected case studies of companies that were in crisis and took activesteps to counteract or control the crisis effects. Regular defensive behaviors of such companiesin crisis involved turnaround activities in ownership and financial areas. Usually they involvedthe search for strategic investors willing to acquire shares in indebted companies, to repay theirdebts and to turn them around. Specific behaviors were also found involving shutting downcompanies and transferring their names and traditions to other companies that were in a goodfinancial condition and had good sports potential.
