DEFORMATIONS AND FRACTURE OF COATING-SUBSTRATE SYSTEMS UNDER CONTACT LOAD

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 231, Issue 3

Abstract

Thin coatings are particularly applied to machine elements and tools working in contact. Theoretical solution of contact for coated systems is still not available, because of the difference in elastic and plastic properties of the surface layer and substrate, its interface properties, and residual stresses. Load bearing capacity of coatingsubstrate systems can be found from indentation experiments by transforming the load-depth indentation diagram to stress-strain diagram. The author depicts a complete procedure for this transformation. In the article, considerations about the deformations and failure of coating-substrate system were presented. Analyses were based on MES modelling and spherical microindentation results. TiN coatings on X6Cr13 steel substrates were under consideration. Critical loads leading to plastic deformation of steel substrate and coating fracture have been evaluated. Determination of these parameters allows one to make a deformation and fracture map for the tested system.
