Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2010, Vol 16, Issue 2

Abstract

Blood serum samples from 161 forestry workers employed at 3 forestry inspectorates and at Roztocze National Park (all in the Lublin Region) were examined by 3 serologic tests (ELISA, indirect immunofluorescence, immunoblotting) for the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies directed against hantaviruses. From among 2 seropositive reactions, only with the antibodies of IgG class, were found in 3 out of 46 examined forestry workers employed at the Roztocze National Park (6.5%) and in 1 out of 53 examined forestry workers employed at the Pulawy forestry inspectorate (1.9%). Out of 4 seropositive results 2 were classified with the presence of antibodies directed against Puumala serotype, while the remaining 2 were classified with the presence of antibodies directed against Dobrava serotype. The cases described in the present work of positive reactions of human sera with hantavirus antigens are the first to be reported from the territory of the Lublin Macroregion. In the examined group of 161 forestry workers, in 58 persons (36%) the presence of specific antibodies directed against Borrelia burgdorferi was also found.
