Determination of Physical Properties of two Walnut Genotypes

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 6

Abstract

When it comes to identification from similar products and sorting, transfer, movement, packaging and fragility, characterizing and telling the properties of agricultural products is of high importance. Physical properties such as dimension, mass, density and surface area play significant roles in sorting. This research has been done in Agricultural Department of Bu-Ali Sina University in the period of 2010-2011. Morphological properties of two genotypes of walnut available in Hamedan's Toyserkan have been measured in this paper. According to the measures, the average weight of Hard Shell genotype's Walnuts is 10.91 gram, and for the Thin Shell's Walnut is 11.99 gram in which the weight in each case has got a direct relationship to the walnuts' diameter, length and width and there's a significant difference between them. Also, there's a significant difference between the Thin Shell's nutmeat weighting 7.48 gram and the Hard Shell genotype with average weight of 6.17. According to the measures, there's a reverse relationship between the shell's thickness and content of nutmeat in both of the genotypes. Also, there's a significant difference in sphericity and surface area of the walnuts. Based on the experiments, there's no significant difference between the Hard Shell genotype's mass static friction angle and the other surfaces, but there's a significant difference between the Thin Shell and the other surfaces. As a result, regarding the measurements, Thin Shell genotype is potentially preferred by the customers due to its big nutmeat and easily applied in walnut breaker machine.
