Development of contemporary serological diagnosis of syphilis
Journal Title: Dermatologia Kliniczna - Year 2006, Vol 8, Issue 3
Abstract
The significant advances in methods of laboratory diagnosis of syphilis have been made since the implementation of Wassermann reaction one hundred years ago. The paper presents principal directions of these advances, mainly in treponemal tests: replacement of native antigens of Treponema pallidum by recombinant ones, studies on new treponemal immunogenes and development of rapid syphilis tests that can be used in field conditions. The new diagnostic guidelines and strategies that follow the changing epidemiology of syphilis should be introduced.
