DIAGNOSTICS OF FUTURE NAVIGATORS’ COMPETITIVENESS

Abstract

The article highlights the urgency of the research problem ‒ the formation of the future navigators’ competitiveness. The diagnostics results of the cadets’ competitiveness according to the criteria of the construct under study are presented: adaptive-stimulating, cognitive-operational, personality-self-evaluating. The diagnostic procedure for each criterion is described including characteristics of the methods used. To diagnose the future navigator’s competitiveness, these methods were used: questioning / interviewing with the purpose of determining the degree of their awareness of the phenomenon «competitiveness», ranking, determining the factors of importance in shaping the future navigators’ competitiveness, methods: motives for choosing the profession of a navigator (S. Danchenko), personality diagnosis (V. Smajkal and М. Kucher), «Motivation for achievement» motives for choosing the profession of a navigator (S. Danchenko) to diagnose of personality’s orientation (V. Smajkal and M. Kucher) «Motivation for achievement» (D. McClelland), «Motivation of professional activity» (K. Zamfir), a multilevel personal questionnaire «Adaptability» (A. Maklakov and S. Chermyanin) «Adaptive behaviour strategies» (according to N. Melnikova), etc. At the beginning of the stating stage of the experiment, a survey of the first-year students majoring in Navigation (those without any shipboard experience), fifth-year students (those who had a little experience in shipgoing practice) and part-time students (those who had some experience in navigating) was conducted in order to determine their level of awareness of the phenomenon «competitiveness». There also was conducted a ranking in order to determine the factors of significance for the future navigators in the development of their competitiveness. The students' answers to the questions of the questionnaire as well as the results of the ranking showed the students’ limited awareness regarding the navigator’s competitiveness and its role in his / her professional activities. The used set of methods made it possible to determine the formation levels of future navigators’ competitiveness at the stating stage of the experiment. Thus, in the first group, 8,6% of the respondents constituting the experimental group and 8,3% of the second group demonstrated the high level of the navigators’ competitiveness at the stating stage. 14,6% of the future navigators constituting the first group and 12,8% of the second group achieved the sufficient level. 38,4% of the respondents constituting the first group and 39,8% of the second group had outcomes in compliance with the satisfactory level. 38,4% of the first group and 39,1% of the second group demonstrated the low level. The received results of the diagnostics proved the necessity of carrying out systemic work aimed at the formation of the future navigators’ competitiveness at the marine higher school. The prospects for further research are seen in the determination, theoretical substantiation and experimental verification of the pedagogical conditions for the formation of the future navigators’ competitiveness in the process of their training in marine universities.
