Difficulties for a contemporary musician in reading and interpreting the 18th century music of the French masters
Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
The article is an attempt to indicate the difficulties a contemporary performer of the 18th century French music comes across. On the basis of historical sources, the author describes the matters connected with reading and interpreting 18th century ornaments, note values, proper interpretation of dotted rhythms and articulation markings (which appear in the music text in a small number). She also touches on the problem of the meaning of articulation itself and of its consequence, i.e., the necessity to use the performance manner known as notes inègales.
