DILEMMAS FACING PSYCHOLOGISTS WORKING WITH PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH ADHD SYMPTOMS. THE PROBLEM OF CONTROL AND INDEPENDENCE SUPPORT IN PARENTING CHILDREN WITH SELF-CONTROL ISSUES

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2014, Vol 47, Issue 5

Abstract

In the article, the author discusses the difficulties parents of children with ADHD symptoms encounter in exercising control over their children’s behavior. Based on data from the literature and her own clinical experiences, the author distinguishes two forms of controlling interventions used by parents: supportive control and punishing control. Analysis of psychological support offered to parents of children with ADHD shows that the main goal of this support is to teach parents to use consistent, rational and effective supportive control with their children. Referring to self-determination theory by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, the author analyzes the effects of parents’ increased external control on the development of the child’s subjectivity. She suggests what conditions parents’ control over the behavior of their children with ADHD symptoms should meet so as to make it possible for their children to develop independent self-regulation skills.
