Does statins increase the risk of liver damage?

Abstract
Statins inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis, successfully prevent the coronary heart disease and rarely cause adverse effects. Higher risk of liver damage can be expected in elderly patients, with other systemic diseases, receiving other drugs that interact with statin metabolism or treated with higher doses of statins. There are presented results of randomized trials and meta-analyses concerning side effects of statins, particularly increased aminotransferases in healthy patients and with chronic liver damage. There are described four main hepatic syndromes considered in context of statins treatment: acute liver failure, hepatitis or cholestasis and increased elevation of aminotransferases in serum. Chronic biochemical evidence of liver damage is mild and does not lead to the severe consequences. Statin therapy is not associated with a higher risk of severe hepatotoxicity in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and chronic hepatitis caused by HCV.
