Does the presence of gifted students in the classroom threaten the academic self-image of their peers?

Abstract

One of the most controversial issues in the discussion on different forms of education for gifted and talented students is associated with streaming, i.e. grouping gifted students in homogeneous classes. Doubts arise not only over ethical issues, but also psychological ones – for example, over the influence of such grouping on gifted students’ self-concept (the big-fish-little-pond effect). In this paper, we deal with a problem inspired by these discussions, but only indirectly related to them. We are interested in the role the presence of gifted students plays for their peers’ academic self-concept. A study on a sample of middle-school students (N = 3604) showed – as expected based on the literature – that in the social comparison process in the classroom, the level of the average or “mean” student is much more important than the presence and number of gifted students. Gifted students seem to be beyond the reach of their peers to such a degree that, in principle, they are not considered as a point of reference in the comparison process. We discuss both theoretical as well as practical consequences of these findings.
