In ancient Rome in different periods, even during the reign of the emperor Caligula. Setting goals. Speaking of the first satirical paintings that appeared in Rome, first of all, one should pay attention to the historical conditions that existed, the tolerance of society to this kind of art, the popularity and influence of satirical paintings among the people. Compared with Egyptian and Greek satirical paintings, the first signs of this art form in Rome can be found in later times, approximately from the beginning of the III century BC. In this period, the Romans had the opportunity to exhaust knowledge from the Greeks, who have a more ancient and rich culture. It becomes known that the Romans, like in other areas of art, very often used this easy and convenient tactic. Purpose of the article. The main purpose of the article is to examine the early stages of the development of the caricature and its primary forms in Roman art, to analyze the history of the birth of this unique genre, which has been tested for several centuries, to provide information about very rare works that can be called the early prototypes of the Roman caricature. Statement of the main material. Contemporaries of the period wrote that during the theatrical performances, the Romans in most cases did not pay attention to the actors, at any time in the middle of the performance left it and went to watch rope walkers or gladiatorial fights. Even in subsequent periods - at a time when all the world's riches flowed into Rome, oversaturated from the entertainment of the Romans, it was very difficult to surprise. Swanky Romans, distinguished by high demands and taste, could attract only new, unusual, stronger impressions. A peculiar satirical-humorous feeling of each people, its relation to what is happening around, an indicator of culture, morality, the formed taste of this people. Satirical paintings and examples of caricatures of the Romans, distinguished in this respect by high taste, ancient culture and rich traditions, along with the enrichment of world culture, can be perceived as the first parodies or illustrations for theatrical performances. Conclusions. The good mood, high spirit position that caused the artists of that period solemn performances, colorful stage attributes, actors' clothes and of course, comic masks of various character, created by the Romans about twenty centuries ago, gave rise to numerous satirical-humorous drawings that reached our days.
