HISTORICAL AND CHURCH ISSUES IN THE RESEARCH OF IVAN KREVETSKYI

Abstract
As an antithesis of the escalated relations between Galician Ukrainians and Poles in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, I. Krevetskyi reconstructed little-known impressive examples of assistance from the Greek Catholic priests to the participants of the Polish uprising of 1830 – 1831. The work «False Metrics for Polish Insurrections in 1830 – 1831 The reason for the characterization of the Galician-Rus clergy of the first half of the nineteenth century» was written on the basis of Henry Bohdansky’s materials found in the manuscript department of the Ossolinski library in Lviv. Another interesting plot of historical and religious studies by I.Krevetskyi was the attraction of attention to the participation of the clergy in the process of creating self-defense units of Ukrainian Galicians who supported the Austrian government in the revolutionary events of 1848 – 1849. He noted three forms of their military organization (to each of them he devoted a special study): 1) peasant defense of the Galician-Hungarian borderland (Krevetskyi, 1905); 2) Rus mountain rifleman (Krevetskyi, 1912); 3) Rus National Guards (Krevetskyi, 1913). The historians paid due attention to the active participation in this process of Greek-Catholic priests who rallied around the headed by Bishop Hrihoriy Yakhymovich of the Main Rus Council and its affiliates. The Ukrainian clergy became aware of the importance of the «people’s militia» and therefore applied energetic measures to popularize it among the masses, thus awakening national consciousness. I. Krevetskyi investigated the first participation of Ukrainian Galicia in the parliamentary elections in 1848, paying particular attention to the attitude of representatives of the Greek Catholic Church to these events. The scientist proved that the Ukrainian clergy defended their people, and this, as the scientists believe, is obvious, since in the conditions of the national suppression, only the clergy remained what should be called the national intelligentsia. I. Krevetskyi also showed an active position of the Ukrainian clergy in the important event of the division of Galicia into Ukrainian and Polish parts. It has been found out that the historical and religious studies of I. Krevetskyi received considerable resonance and approval marks in the historical literature of his time. Reviewers (for example, I. Franko and S. Tomashivskyi) noted the novelty of the scholar’s historical thinking, pointing to the attraction of the previously unpublished sets of documents, which allowed the researchers to explore important pages of the past of the Ukrainians in Galicia during the period of an active national construction. It is concluded that among various problems of the history of Galicia of the nineteenth century studied by I. Krevetskyi, the proper place was devoted to the issues of the national revival of the Galician Ukrainians and a significant contribution made by their clergy – the Greek Catholic priests.
