Ecology farming and quality of water
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 1
Abstract
In ecology farming, human interference is limited to the necessary minimum. This method of management is an alternative to conventional farming, and its primary goal is the production of high nutritive quality food, so-called ‘health food’. Maintaining ecologic balance, sustainable plant and animal production on farms provides self-sufficiency with respect to the production of animal fodder and fertilizers (natural) for crop cultivation. Farm animals should be bred without the use of antibiotics, hormones, and other substances not in accord with their natural needs; they should be provided wellbeing, adequate space in the rooms, access to paddocks, grazing grounds, pure water, etc.Ecology farming should not create risk for the environment, but should undertake actions on behalf of its protection. Managing natural resources (e.g. water) should be carried out with respect to the laws of nature.Ecology farming minimizes the risk of eutrophisation of water bodies (an excessive development of algae) caused by washing-out of artificial fertilizers from soil which, in effect, is conductive to the biological balance in the water biotope, and good development of water plants and animals. However, the ecology system of management may exert a negative effect on the bacteriological purity of water resources (the basic fertilizers applied in this system are natural fertilizers, such as: manure, dung, dung water, and less hazardous compost or green manure). Therefore, in order to protect water resources it is very important to properly manage natural fertilizers, proper management of household wastewater, construction of good quality (sealed) septic tanks, properly located ground toilets (with the preservation of protective zones).
