Journal Title: Pielęgniarstwo XXI wieku - Year 2012, Vol 11, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. In the last few years there has been a very dynamic development of the interventional cardiology in Poland. There is a growing number of health centres with haemodynamic laboratories which make it possible to diagnose coronary heart disease quickly and effectively. At the moment coronarography is considered a "golden standard" of this diagnosis. Because of an increasing accessibility of this procedure and the part it plays both for physicians and for patients this work is an attempt to assess the level of knowledge of the patients referred for invasive diagnostics. Aim.The goal of this thesis is to specify educational needs of the patients qualified for coronarography. Material and methods. The research was conducted among 100 patients of the Cardiology Ward of the Regional Hospital in Sucha Beskidzka over a span of four months: from 1st January to 30th April 2011. The patients were selected at random. The method used in the study was a diagnostic survey, conducted by means of author's own survey form. Results. The analysis of research materials indicates that half of the subjects had a fairly wide knowledge about coronarography: 45% respondents received very good rating and 5% of them a good one. The knowledge of the second half, on the other hand, was much more limited: 35% of study subjects received poor rating and as many as 15% got an unsatisfactory score. It should be emphasized that the second group included inhabitants of rural areas, the elderly with lower level of education, as presented in the statistical analysis. Conclusions. Statistical analysis of the results shows statistically significant differences between age, education, place of residence and the knowledge about coronarography. Presented results lead to a conclusion about the necessity to initiate appropriate activities in relation to the intervention group. This is the task of all the members of each therapeutic group.
