Effect of Small Rodents on Acorn Predation and Dispersal of Three Oak Species in Zijinshan Mountain,Nanjing

Journal Title: 河南科技大学学报(自然科学版) - Year 2016, Vol 37, Issue 3

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of habitat fragmentation on small rodents and Quercus seed fates. Tagged acorns of Q. variabilis,Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica were pair-released and tracked in Zijinshan Mountain,Nanjing during October 2012 to May 2013. The results show that small rodents prefer to acorns of Q. mongolica over those of Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima. Acorn of the three oak species are either eaten in situ or left in seed stations by small rodents, resulting in a few acorns dispersed by rodents.Acorns of Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima are more likely to establish seedlings at seed stations while acorns of Q. mongolica are less likely to produce seedlings. The diminishing of small rodents and the failure of seed dispersal has resulted in seedling establishment of Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima at seed stations.
