Effect of Soil on Longitudinal Mode Guided Wave Propagation of Pipeline

Journal Title: 河南科技大学学报(自然科学版) - Year 2019, Vol 40, Issue 1

Abstract

Aiming at the defect detection problem of ultrasonic guided wave technology in buried pipeline under different geographical environment, the frequency dispersion and attenuation characteristics of longitudinal mode in buried pipeline was analyzed. A three-dimensional finite element model of buried pipeline was established to analyze the effects of excitation frequency and soil type on the longitudinal mode guided wave propagation. The L ( 0, 2) modal was motivated and received through surface-bonded piezoelectric ceramic chip in buried pipeline, The results show that with the increase of excitation frequency, the L ( 0, 2) the modal energy attenuation will increase gradually. At the excitation frequency of 40 kHz, the attenuation of longitudinal mode guided wave is relatively small for the hard clay with smaller elastic modulus. Therefore, the low elastic modulus of buried pipeline is better to be detected by using the low frequency longitudinal ultrasonic guided wave mode, which can effectively improve the guided wave detection distance.
