Abstract
The Eastern Mediterranean in general terms Mediterranean coast of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Gaza strip and the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) refers to the region that covers the island of Cyprus under the management of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The region has managed to attract the world’s attention with the reports and reserve discoveries published in recent years. The discovery of energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean region has deepened the problems of the dispute between coastal states of maritime jurisdiction issue. It causes new equations to be established in the region. In addition to the historical disputes between the states of the region, the economic and political disagreements reveal the importance of the legal perspective to resolve the problem. 1982 UNCLOS authorizes sovereign powers to states within the content of the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone Concepts in order to benefit from these resources. Turkey, which has the longest coastline in the region; has an important legal position in terms of extracting existing resources and operating and delivering them to international markets. The efforts of the coastal states to the Eastern Mediterranean to limit their maritime jurisdictions to an equal distance method form the basis of the problem in this region. The complex structure of the Mediterranean geography requires the problem to be solved on the basis of the principle of fairness. This study will examine the conflict over the jurisdiction of the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
