LEGAL STATUS OF THE CASPIAN SEA

Abstract

In today's world, the Caspian region is the center of attention of various powers. The hydrocarbon resources of the new Caspian region, which opened up to the world, primarily attract the attention of non-regional states and companies. The peoples and governments of the Caspian countries attribute their main hopes for a stable and prosperous future to oil and gas. Indeed, without a solid legal basis, the orderly and civilized coexistence of the coastal states, their cooperation with each other, and with non-regional partners, the protection of the Caspian nature could not be reliably assured. Studying the geopolitical characteristics of the Caspian region makes it possible to identify possible intersections of interests of global players at the present stage of ongoing political conflicts. This article will discuss whether the Caspian Sea is a lake or a sea under international law and the Legal Status Agreement signed in 2018.
