Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation on Physicochemical Properties of Low-Density Polyethylene

Journal Title: Jaunųjų mokslininkų darbai - Year 2011, Vol 32, Issue 3

Abstract

It has been established that polyethylene film is oxidized being irradiated by 254 nm wavelength radiation and it leads to the appearance of the carbonyl (C=O) groups, the amount of which is increasing in linear dependence to the duration of irradiation. The relative dielectric constant of the polyethylene estimated by measuring of the electric capacity correlates with the level of the oxidation. The measurements of the inductance discover that relative magnetic permittivity of the polyethylene increases in dependence to the duration of irradiation as a function of the second degree. The mobility of polyethylene decreases slightly, while the samples are irradiated during 216 hours. Lengthening the duration of irradiation decreases the mobility sharply, the film becomes friable, its thickness declines, possibly as a result of photo-degradation. 360 nm wavelength radiation has no effect on polyethylene physical and chemical characteristics
