Effects of a selected exercise programme on balance and performance improvement in patients with incomplete ankle sprain (Grades I, II)..
Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 8
Abstract
Study aim: To evaluate the balance and performance improvement in patients with incomplete ankle sprain subjected to a specific exercise programme.Material and methods: A group of 12 male and female subjects in the acute phase (2 – 5 weeks postinjury) treated clinically and at therapy centres were studied. Performance of the subjects, before and after the selected exercise programme, was measured by the ankle performance standard questionnaire as well as the SLST balance test. Results: A significant difference was observed between pre-test average ( x 20.83 18.80) and post-test average ( x 57.5 7.53), (P<0.05, T=6.412) in the performance factor of patients with incomplete ankle sprain. As to balance, difference of the subjects’ pretest and post-test averages was reported equal to 5.5, (P<0.05) so that ankle performance and balance in standing on the injured leg for more than 55 seconds was improved 63% and 50% respectively, after the end of the exercise programme. Conclusions: The selected exercise programme including range of motion, strengthening, and balance trainings positively influences performance and balance in patients with incomplete ankle sprain.
