Effects of Dimple Diameter on Friction and Wear Properties of 45 Steel

Journal Title: 河南科技大学学报(自然科学版) - Year 2018, Vol 39, Issue 6

Abstract

Four surface textures with diameters of 10 μm, 50 μm, 100 μm and 150 μm were machined on 45 steel surface by laser processing. Under dry friction and starved oil conditions, ball-on-disk contact friction tests were performed to study the effects of diameter on the friction and wear properties of 45 steel. The results show that under the dry friction condition the friction coefficient increases firstly and then decreases with the increase of pit diameter. When the diameter is 50 μm, the friction coefficient of the sample is maximum 0. 67. Under the starved oil condition, the friction coefficient is 0. 15 with diameter 10 μm, which is smaller than that of the other samples. The texture surface shows better wear resistance than the non-textured surface. Compared with the non-textured samples, the wear rate of textured samples decreases. The bigger the pit diameter is, the more obvious the wear rate decreases under the starved oil condition. The effect of diameter on wear rate is very complicated under poor oil condition.
