Effects of Polarity on Evolution Process and Erosion of Current-carrying Arc

Abstract

Experiment on the effects of polarity on evolution process and erosion of current-carrying arc was carried out in the home-made current-carrying arc testing machine. The results indicate that when tunsten probe as the anode and copper as the cathode, current-carrying arc burns vigorously and lasts for a long time along with overflowing of large amounts of vapors, so severe erosion is observed. However, when tunsten probe is used as the cathode and copper as the anode, current-carrying arc burns faintly for a short time along with overflowing of little vapors and the arc erosion is alleviated. It is found that current-carrying arc has obvious polarity characteristics. The evaporation and gasification of anode material have distinct influence on arc burning by analyzing the producing mechanism of charged particles, the arc states and the arc erosion mechanism. Thus the current-carrying arc burning can be restrained by dispersing heat input of electrons in arc. The arc erosion can be alleviated through shortening burn time of metallic vapor state arc.
