Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which systemic arterial blood pressure is elevated. Nearly billion people are suffering from this condition, world wide. Around 2/5th of Indian urban Adult population are affected. Non pharmacological therapy like yoga plays a major role in regulating blood pressure. Pranayama is one of the limbs of astanga yoga .This study was done to study and assess the effect of sitali and sitkari pranayama in essential hypertension patients. METHODS: - 50 volunteers aged between 25-50 years were screened from general population. They were visiting Kasturba Nature Cure Hospital and Yoga institute. They were classified in to 2 groups, based on the duration of illness since diagnosis: Less than 5yrs and between 5to 10yrs.These subjects were randomly allocated to experimental (n=25) and control group (n=25). The subjects recruited for the experimental group were administered with sitali and sitkari pranayama for a period of 20min for 6days a week for 30days. Heart rate and BP were recorded before and after 30days of intervention .Control group not practicing the yoga therapy. (Not practicing pranayama) RESULTS: - Data was checked for normal distribution and analysis by using paired‘t’ test with spss(21.0)Software. There was significant decrease in the blood pressure, heart rate in experimental group when compared to control group. CONCLUSION:- Sitali & sitkari pranayama reduces sympathetic tone and shifts sympathovagal balance towards vagal dominance and hence support the claim that these pranayama can be effectively used to lower the blood pressure in hypertensives.
