English Academic Writing: experimental teaching students within a Master’s programme

Abstract

The article highlights the implementation of the intermediate stage of the methodological experiment, experimental training, to verify the efficiency of methods applied to teaching stylistic requirements for academic writing to students doing their Master’s Degrees in Physics. The article focuses on the detailed description of the essence and objectives of the experiment on this stage. The results obtained by the methods of mathematical statistics have been analyzed and interpreted before and after the experimental teaching on the basis of previously developed experimental materials complex. In the course of the pre-experimental test the final level of competency in English academic writing among control groups of students who had not previously been taught by the author’s technique was determined. The post-experimental test, in its turn, enabled to determine the final level of competency in English academic writing among experimental groups of students who had previously been trained by the author’s technique. Typical mistakes and the Master’s student’s competency level in academic writing before and after the experimental teaching have been analyzed and interpreted taking into consideration the academic writing evaluation criteria. The validity of both “differentiated” and “integrated” versions of the developed author’s methods applied to teaching stylistic requirements for academic writing to students doing their Master’s Degrees in Physics has been experimentally verified, regarding the adherence to the goals and content of the teaching of academic writing, psychological, psycholinguistic and methodological considerations, difficulties in learning; the principles of relevant selection of lexical and grammatical material and sample texts as well; correct training stages, which are implemented using specially designed exercises and tasks, as well as project methods. The article hopes to contribute to the development of professional competence taking into consideration the students’ individual professional needs as well as in the formation of the ability to independently write a scientific article at the level the paper could be accepted for publication abroad.
