Epilepsy old and new challenges
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 1
Abstract
Epilepsy is a serious and common chronic neurologic disorder. As many as 6 million people in Europe currently have active epilepsy. The term epilepsy encompasses a vast and heterogeneous spectrum of epileptic syndromes and diseases with different type of seizures. The incidence has two major peaks in childhood and old age. Beside fact that a large number of antiepileptic drugs that suppress the seizure are now available, so far we have no treatments that prevent the development of epilepsy. This paper lists what scientists have achieved in epilepsy so far and identifies further challenges in epilepsy research and clinical practice. Death is the most devastating outcome in epilepsy. Sudden death is over 20 times more frequent in people with epilepsy than in general population. This paper highlights some of new advances in understanding Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy SUDEP.
