Journal Title: Ciencia e Investigación Médica Estudiantil Latinoamericana - Year 2007, Vol 12, Issue 1

Abstract

Objectives: To know the etiology and maternal factors associated to the intrauterine fetal death after the 20th week of pregnancy. Design: Descriptive study. Setting: Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of the Hospital Clinico Regional in Antofagasta. Participants: Fetal intrauterine deaths happened after the 20th week of pregnancy, which childbirths were delivered in the hospital. Interventions: Review of the delivery room records, the medical histories, the fetal death audits, and fetal autopsy reports. Main outcome measures: Frequencies and percentages according to the age of the mother and her previous pathologies. Results: 50 cases of fetal death after 20 week’s gestation were found, 33 of these cases were delay fetal death. 30,4% of the pregnant women have between 15-20 years of age, 61% of women had prior pregnancies, 11% of the studied women consume toxic substances during pregnancy and 15% of them have not prenatal care. 67,4% of fetal deaths occurred at home. The maternal pathologies related to the pregnancy were: obesity, preeclampsy, and syphilis and Streptococcus agalactiae infection. The fetal and ovular etiology corresponded to 15% and 46% each one. The cause of death was indeterminate in 17% of the cases. Conclusions: Most of fetal deaths were delayed. They occurred with more frequency in patients between 15 to 20 years. The most important associated factors are potentially identifiable, such as toxic substance consume and not controlled pregnancy. Many of them must have early diagnosis and treatment in an adequate prenatal care.
