Prevalence of the smoking habit in school teenagers in Asuncion, Paraguay

Abstract
[b]Objective:[/b] To identify the prevalence of smoking habit in teenagers from public and private schools in the Central department, Paraguay. [b]Design: [/b]Transverse and analytical study.[b] Setting:[/b] Central Department, Paraguay.[b] Patients: [/b]Non-probability sample of 478 teenagers between 12 and 17 years old between May and June, 2006. [b]Interventions:[/b] Structured and anonymous Questionnaire.[b] Main outcome measures: [/b]Measures of Chi square and Odds ratio of the smoking habit risk factors. [b]Results:[/b] The prevalence of smoking habit in the teenagers studied was 11 %, 51 % of them were males. 22 % of them initiate the habit of smoking at the age of 12. Besides, 59 % of them initiate by curiosity, and also 11 % of them smoke every day. In addition, 27 %of them also consume both, alcohol and cigarettes. 58 % of the smokers possess this habit in their families (OR = 1, 76), 67 % of the smokers has an unstable family environment (OR=0, 22), 84 % of the smokers know the consequences of smoking (OR=3, 27) and 26 % of them works (OR=2, 34).[b] Conclusions: [/b]The risk factors for smoking habit found in this study were family smoking habits and a job. In addition, knowing the consequences of the smoking habits is not considered to be a protective factor in this study.
