Evaluation of antioxidant activities of silk protein sericin secreted by silkworm Antheraea assamensis (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12

Abstract

In this study, we report the in vitro antioxidant activity of silk sericin- a waste protein produced by the non-mulberry silkworm Antheraea assamensis (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) which is available only in Northeast (NE) region of India, particularly in Assam. In vitro antioxidant activity of aqueous extract (AE) of sericin was evaluated by employing various well- established method i.e., 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation inhibiting effect, reducing power etc. Chemical composition analysis of AE of sericin revealed that it is a good source of total polyphenols (46.72 mg/g) and flavanoids (3.06 mg/g) compounds. Results obtained in the present investigation showed potential in vitro antioxidant activity against DPPH · free radicals, reducing power and lipid peroxidation induced by Fe 2+ ascorbate in rat liver homogenate. IC 50 value of sericin in regards to DPPH · free radical savenging activity and in vitro lipid peroxidation were calculated and found to be 8 µg/mL and 19.25 µg/mL respectively. Polyphenol and flavanoid contents might contribute to its free radical scavenging potential. The results indicated that the waste protein sericin is a natural antioxidant with a potent antioxidative activity which could lead to significant economic and social benefits.
