Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 6
Abstract
Inflammation is a body’s defence reaction to injury in order to eliminate or limit the spread of injurious agents followed by the removal of necrosed cells and tissues. Agents causing inflammation are physical agents (heat, cold, radiation and mechanical trauma), Chemical agents (organic and inorganic poisons), Infective agents (bacteria, viruses), and Immunological agents (antigenantibody reactions). Inflammation may be acute (short duration) or chronic (prolonged duration). Algesia meaning pain. Pain may be defined as an unpleasant sensation, but on the whole it is usually beneficial to living beings. It is mainly a protective mechanism for the body which occurs whenever any tissues are being damaged or abraded. It causes the individual to remove the pain stimulus to get relief from pain. Inflammation is essential for healing and repairing of wounds and infections. Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions. Healing may be either regeneration or repair. Regeneration may be defined as formation of new cells by mitosis (cell cycle). Repair may be defined as replacement of injured tissue by fibrous tissue. The healing of wound is a complex process that involves a series of reactions. In the developing countries like India and China traditional herbal drugs and their products are used for the inflammation along with allopathic or the western system of medicine. This review comprises of the various aspects of inflammation and the herbal drugs that are used for the treatment of inflammation.
