Evaluation of body composition in students with different degrees of physical activity by the method of bioelectrical impedancje
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. Improving physical activity of the population in a strategic objective of the National Health Programme for 2007-2015. This is highly reasonable as Polish society is not very physically active. It is estimated that a mere 30% of children and youth and 10% of adults are involved in forms of motion whose type and intensity of effort meet physiological requirements of their bodies. Poor awareness of sports and leisure needs is the fundamental reason for this situation. Aim. Assessment of body composition of different level physical activity students.Material and methods. Students of the Technological Humanistic Universityof Radom represent a variety of study subjects and levels of physical activity. The physical activity qualified on basis of declared frequency and the intensity of physical effort of week in free time. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was the test method of choice. Statistical analysis was conducted in support about programme Statistica PL.Results. Differences of body tissue components between the groups of physically active and passive were evaluated by means of Student’s t-test and demonstrated a significant statistical level. BMI was classified as indicating overweight and obesity I° in 66,7% of physically active and passive students. 20,8% of physically active students were categorized as overweight with no cases of obesity. BMI was highly correlated with subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue among physically passive students. Very high correlation levels could be observed between subcutaneous adipose tissue and muscular tissue.Conclusion. Enlarged physical effort about suitable intensity and systematically applied helps to boost protein body weight, reduce contens of subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue, increase lean body mass (LBM), and maintain normal BMI levels.Key words: students, body composition, bioelectrical impedance
