EVOLUTION OF THE THEORY OF INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL

Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the topical problems in the study of intellectual capital. It studies experience of both Ukrainian and foreign scientists. The analysis of scientific sources shows that an exhaustive understanding of the nature of intellectual assets is not yet formed. Nevertheless, tendencies to create post-industrial space dictate the need to find ways to develop and improve the intellectual component of the enterprises. This paper discusses “intellectual capital” as a modern concept that influences business processes and growth of the enterprises. Intellectual capital as a concept is actively developing among economists, theoreticians, researchers. A comparative analysis of the looks of the scientists concerning the definition of “intellectual capital” is offered. The study results in conclusions about the evolution and features of the intellectual capital and intellectual potential of the enterprises, which are the result of systematization and generalization of the previously studied papers. Consideration of the term “intellectual potential” for the purpose of creation of evolution of essence of the studied concept and development of vectors of the theory of intellectual capital are offered. The value of the analysis in practical application is the possibility of choosing the most objective approach for comprehension of the intellectual capital. The research rests on objective principles of the systems approach, economic analysis, logical and comprehensive approach to the assessment of economic phenomena and processes. We have used a set of general and special methods in this article. They are a historical and logical method (for the study of the theoretical foundations of intellectual capital); method of analysis and synthesis (to compare the main approaches to the interpretation of the concepts of intellectual capital); abstract and logical method (for theoretical generalizations and drawing conclusions). Findings are used to support existing managerial practices and policies for better retention practices and management of human resources. In general, researchers find a general understanding that intellectual capital is a certain intangible asset with an obligatory component of social and human capital. The generalization of the developed definitions of intellectual capital, intellectual potential, and intellectual assets of the enterprise gives grounds to assert that today the components of intellectual capital are quite differently determined by researchers: from a certain type of activity (intellectual, creative, innovative, and other activities) and a combination of personal, special or collective knowledge, abilities, experience, employee skills and information, as well as useful relationships with intellectual and strategic business assets (also possible variants of intellectual material, intellectual resources, intellectual property, etc.) and various forms of intellectual property; but in general, economists and researchers do not contradict each other. Accordingly, this concept finds its expression in the form of market advantages, values, profit, cost, innovation development, and intellectual and innovative products. We consider a promising approach to understanding intellectual capital as a complex dynamic system since it enables to analyse and investigate a rather significant and unique synergistic effect from the joint interaction of both intangible assets and traditional capitals of the enterprise.
