EXAMINATION OF THE FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND WEAR RESISTANCE OF MULTILAYER COATINGS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2014, Vol 254, Issue 2

Abstract

The paper presents the opportunity of improving fracture and wear resistance of ceramic and carbon coatings through the introduction of metallic interlayers that exhibit an elastic-plastic character of deformation. The results of indentation and tribological tests of Ti/TiN and a-C:H/TiN multilayer coatings were compared with the results of TiN and a-C:H single coatings. The mechanism of deformation and fracture was analysed by spherical indentation and TEM, SEM microscopic observation of indents. The presented results showed the desirability of the introduction of thin titanium interlayers into multilayer structure. Thin Ti layers were plastically deformed under external contact loading which improved several times the fracture and wear resistance of tested multilayers in comparison to single layers.
