Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 10

Abstract

Background and Objective: Due to the increasing need for safe blood donation and wide use of blood products for treatment of various diseases, increased awareness of students as a low-risk segment of society who is less aware of blood donation is considerably important. The present study aimed to determine students' awareness of blood donation requirements and benefits and the extent of their participation. Materials and Methods: this was a descriptive-cross-sectional study in which 300 students in Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences were selected randomly. The required data on individual characteristics, awareness of blood donation and blood donation requirements, history of blood donation was collected using a check list whose validity and reliability were confirmed in previous studies. The collected data was analyzed using chi-square test and SPSS version 16. Findings: In this study, 202 participants (67.5%) were females and 98 participants (32.1%) were males. In addition, 273 (91%) participants had no history of blood donation and 16 (5.3%) participants had a history of blood donation and 11 (3.7%) were master donors. Moreover, 87% of students knew very little, 9.3% knew little, 2% had moderate awareness and 1.7% had appropriate awareness about blood donation requirements. A significant difference was found between level of awareness, gender, age, place of residence and field of study of students. However, no statistically significant difference was found between history of blood donation and level awareness (P<0.05). Conclusion: Given that a high percentage of students had improper awareness and unfavorable performance in terms of blood donation, it seems that increasing level of awareness of students and families primarily through mass media and secondarily teenagers through textbooks at different levels of education can have a positive impact on attitude and performance of society in terms of blood donation.
