EXPLOITATION AS A MEANS OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL ADAPTATION IN THE PROCESS OF LITERARY TRANSLATION

Abstract
The article analyzes the application of explication in the Ukrainian translations of the novel «The Invisible Man» by H. G. Wells, made by Mykola Ivanov and Oksana Didyk. The purpose of the article is to identify a range of possible ways of explication in the process of literary text translation, their study and systematization, taking into account the general strategy of the translator. Explicatory methods for the rendering of untranslatables are considered: a translation note, which makes explanations beyond the main text; paraphrase, which replaces an element of foreign culture; interpolation, with help of which the original realia is preserved and simultaneously an explanation is added directly to the text. The article emphasizes the special relevance of the mentioned issues in connection with the importance of the use of explication as one of the ways that helps the reader to perceive the author’s idea (intention) adequately; the wide use of this tool in literary, in particular from English into Ukrainian; increased interest in rendering linguistic and cultural identity in the conditions of globalization in the translation; almost complete ignorance of the phenomenon of explication in Ukrainian translation studies
