FALLS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF PARTICIPANTS OF THE ACADEMY OF HEALTHY AGEING

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective: To assess the influence of the fall on the implementation of the physical activity recommendations and health behaviors associated with physical activity among older people.Material and Methods: The study included 136 (121 women and 15 men) participating in the Academy of Healthy Ageing at the age of 68.3 ±6.08 years (mean ± SD), divided into two groups. The criterion for dividing was the occurrence (or not) the fall over the last year. All subjects completed the survey in which they were asked to answer the questions about frequencies of activities of various nature. Stanford physical activity questionnaire was also used in this study. Results: 33% of respondents experienced a fall within the last year. The aerobic exercises in accordance with the guidelines of scientific societies take 36.3% of seniors who have not experienced the fall during the year, and 37.7% of seniors who have fallen; resistance exercise – 14.9% and 18.6%; balance – 16% and 9.3%; stretching – 60.5% and 50% respectively. The average number of health behaviors related to physical activity at a moderate level is 1.9 ±1.27 in patients without falling, and 2.02 ±1.26, for people who have experienced a fall. There were no statistical differences in the level of physical activity between the two groups. Conclusions: 1/3 of seniors falls at least 1 time per year. Most seniors undertake stretching and the aerobic activities regularly. Resistance exercise is the most neglected group of exercises. Seniors in both groups fulfill physical activity recommendations at a similar level. A history of fall does not affect the level of physical activity of seniors participating in the activities of the Academy of Healthy Ageing.
