Formal mentoring in professional preparation of future reserve officers

Abstract

The vast majority of studies relate to traditional or, in other words, informal mentoring, and evidence of formal mentoring programs in the military environment contains many contradictions in their application. The article considers the expediency, effectiveness, efficiency and significance of the introduction of formal mentoring programs into the system of military training of officers. It is the practice of mentoring or mentoring today perceived by scholars as an effective social institution for professional adaptation in the educational field. For this purpose, it is important to design the pedagogical conditions of any professional training, to adhere to the principle: “learning is not discipline, but specialty”. The conclusions of modern empirical research by leading scientists in the field of training military specialists confirm that the practice of targeted mentoring quickly compensates for the need for highly qualified military specialists. They are more confident, more competent, have high probability to achieve leadership positions in the military environment, are more motivated, express their readiness to become mentors in the future. Along with this, a group of foreign scholars who studied the issues of military mentoring noted that the meaningful expectations and effectiveness of formal mentoring programs are far from proportional. When introducing such programs, traditional military relations between experienced and young servicemen are replaced by often unclear rules, regulations and requirements along with a complex system of control. Military experts argue that planning and implementing formal mentor-programs in the absence of a thoughtful corporate strategy leads to inconsistencies and inability to act within the military organization, which in turn leads to premature termination of the programs themselves. Among scholars from many countries, mentoring is seen as the main concept of professional training of military specialists. This testifies to the fact that at the current stage there is an active search for content, forms and methods of ideas of professionally-oriented mentoring. In the research of the technological aspects of formal mentoring differences are noted in the technologies of organization of the educational process and forms of education. These differences give grounds for determining changes in the teaching environment and designing the process of their achievement in the training of future reserve officers. In the process of our research we will try to investigate the effectiveness of the use and development of the properties of military mentoring. This project will make it possible to assess qualitatively whether the existing programs are sufficient and affirmative to meet the current training needs of future military specialists under conditions of professional mentoring
