Gender Patterns of Muslim Women Around Equality and Equity Concepts

Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2009, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The relationship between women and religion is not one-sided, static and unchanging one. There are different ways in which women experience their religion. In gender studies on religion, equality is an actual interest. Equity or complementarity represents another dimension in certain studies. These seem as the main patterns in the studies about Muslim women’s relationships with men. This essay is an attempt to go beyond this classification focusing on the members of a Turkish women group. Participating in the activities of this group and interviewing with these women, it is pointed out that we need a different classification which consists three parts as patterns of equality, complementarity and hybridization. Due to its ambiguous nature, it seems that the last pattern needs to be studied more closely in the future.
