Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
The article examines the phenomenon of immersion in the language environment as the method developed in order to teach people the second language, which suggests that the learned language is used for training purposes. The immersion education is not only suitable for most students, it may also be the only opportunity for some students to learn a foreign language. In some cases, when a student lags behind in development and cognitively, termination of an immersion program is beneficial to the student. The decision which way to go for a particular student, has to be done by a teaching staff working on the immersion program, and the appropriate administration in agreement with the parents. According to the general time that students spend learning on the immersion program, there outline total immersion, partial immersion, two-way immersion or dual immersion, in which half of the student contingent is made up of people who know two or more languages. Students enrolled in immersion meet academic expectations and achieve better results in areas such as knowledge of a foreign language, knowledge of the mother tongue, understanding of the characteristics of other cultures. The author outlines three types of language immersion, early immersion, in which students begin to study their second language at the age of 5 to 6 years; the average immersion when students begin to learn a second language at the age of 9-10, the third type is a late immersion when students learn the language at the age of 11-14 years. Most schools, where foreign language is learned in immersion, set four goals associated with immer- sion: to achieve competence in a foreign language (listening, speaking, reading, writing); to acquire the same level of target language proficiency as source language, like students of schools where language is studied without immersion; to master the skills and ideas of the academic disciplines; to achieve a better understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Suggested are the recommendations for the application of immersion in the teaching of foreign languages: using stories, execution of tasks, use of language learning standards, use of reliable evaluation, use of online resources, estab- lishing contacts with the culture of the language studied, deepening knowledge of both languages, understanding the characteristics of other cultures.
