Grek – między humanizmem a hezychazmem

Journal Title: Slavia Orientalis - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 4

Abstract

Maximus the Greek, identified as Michael Trivolis, is an emblematic person of his age. He was born in Greek Arta in 1470 and grew up on Corfu Island. In the year, when Christopher Columbus discovered America, Michael went to Italy, perhaps with the Greek humanist John Lascaris. He knew main figures of the Renaissance. For a long time he stayed in Florence, where Savonarola was preaching his passionate homilies. He became a novice at the Dominican convent of Saint Marco. After a year he went to Venice and joined the famous editor Aldus Manutius. In 1505-1506 Trivolis as the monk Maximus joined the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. In March 1518 the Hagiorite came to Moscow and for 7 years he directed Russian translators. In 1525 he was judged under suspicion of heresy and was sent to the Joseph-Volotsky Monastery. Maximus the Greek was rehabilitated 5 years before his death. He was buried in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in 1556. Finally he identified himself with the mystical-ascetic trend in the Orthodoxy monasticism called Hesychasm.
