Health behaviours of boys and girls at younger school age

Abstract

Introduction: Shaping the optimum health promoting choices among children and adolescents is among the major health promotion tasks in the area of practical activity. objective: Recognition of health promoting behaviours declared by boys and girls at a younger school age. Material and methods: The study covered 83 schoolchildren attending classes I, II and III forms at the Elementary School No. 11 in Lublin in 2010, and conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey, using a questionnaire technique. The values of the analyzed parameters were characterized using numbers and percentage. Results: The majority of girls (83.7%) and boys (85.0%) in the study have encountered the concept of health promoting life style – 44.2% of girls and 35.0% of boys associate it with rational nutrition, physical activity, amount of sleep and leisure, and the preservation of safety in daily living. More than a half of the girls (51.2%) and 35.0% of the boys most often devote 1 hour daily to physical activity. As many as 76.7% of girls and 80.0% of boys prefer passive forms of leisure (computer and/or television). Nearly 40% of schoolchildren consume products of the fast-food type every day. The majority of girls (74.4%), and a half of the boys are concerned with oral cavity hygiene. Conclusions: 1. Schoolchildren’s knowledge concerning health promoting life style is most frequently associated with the amount and type of food products consumed, everyday physical activity, going to bed early and the preservation of safety at school. 2. The majority of health behaviours among the schoolchildren examined are inadequate. 3. Targeted health education should be carried out in the group of boys and girls at younger school age.Key words: health behaviours, boys and girls, younger school age
