Helicopter Details Detection Using Micro-Doppler Signature

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 9

Abstract

One of the most important issues in modern radar systems is detecting more details of targets beside of their distance and speed. To detect the key features and detailed parameters of a helicopter from radar signal, a new feature extraction and pattern recognition algorithm is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, the time-frequency distribution of Micro-Doppler frequency is formed as a 2-dimensional signal which is called micro-Doppler signature. Then, some features are extracted from the micro-Doppler signature to be used for the helicopter recognition. To evaluate the proposed algorithm by simulation, the micro-Doppler signatures of helicopter blades for a wide range of detailed parameters are generated by a known model. Simulation results show a high recognition performance for the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm can be used for many types of helicopters with wide ranges of specification parameters such as blade length, number of blades, and blade rotation rates.
