Hepatotoxicity of squirting cucumber. Zoom on a phytotherapy in Algerian society
Journal Title: PhytoChem & BioSub Journal - Year 2018, Vol 12, Issue 3
Abstract
Herbal medicine occupies an important place among the disciplines of medication used in many societies including Algerian society. However, the danger of its use, often underestimated, poses health problems. Hepatotoxicity is one of the major undesirable effects of medicinal plants, the physiological importance of the liver, and the diversity of plants that may affect it. Our work aims at listing the Algerian plants, used in traditional therapeutics, and that at the herbalists of the city of Constantine in the east of Algeria. Our study revealed a misuse of plants for therapeutic purposes in the absence of sufficient knowledge of their risk. "Ecballium elaterium L." as an example illustrating the transition from therapeutics to toxicity. The in vivo study on the mouse is a result of research on liver lesions and a very low volume from death of 50% of mice and those by the oral route and intraperitoneal route
