HERMENEUTICS AND INTERPRETATIVE SEMIOTICS IN U. ECO’S WORKS
Journal Title: Мова - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 21
Abstract
The article deals with the main ideas of U. Eco’s interpretative semiotics. U. Eco has revised traditional hermeneutics from the point of view of semiotics and has substantiated the inclusion of such notions as «intentio operis» (intention of text), «intentio lectoris» (intention of reader), «intentio auctoris» (intention of author) in the conception of «hermeneutic circle». These notions, as well as «overinterpretation», make up the grounds of U. Eco’s hermeneutics. In the present article much attention is given to the phenomenon of overinterpretation and its realization in the novel «Foucault’s Pendulum». The overinterpretation is considered as an ideological explanation of text. As U. Eco affirms, the main method of such an explanation is a Hermetic strategy. The author of this article analyses the Hermetic strategy of interpretation which was created in the novel «Foucault’s Pendulum» by U. Eco and also proves why such a strategy of textual interpretation is a priori ineffective and will lead to misunderstanding of texts.
