Journal Title: Мова - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 26

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the ethnic and cultural peculiarities of idioms with a zoomorphic component and linguistic expressive means in modern English, reflecting cultural and national stereotypes and showing the distinctive characteristics of mentality of one or another linguo-cultural community. The subject-matter of this study is the transferred, figurative meaning of English idioms with zoomorphic vocabulary which have various functions in the language and have a special semantic loading (typical of different human qualities, actions, conditions, etc.). The hypothesis of the research is that zoomorphemes as part of a language picture of the world and also as basis for idioms allow depicting the national character of English speakers, the peculiarities of their mentality and making a contribution to the knowledge of their national and mental culture and traditions. Results: English phraseologisms are mostly original English phrases, the authors of which are unknown. Initially, the British zoomorphic phraseologisms are concerned with the traditions, customs and beliefs of the British identity and also with the realia, legends, and historical facts. A vast number of English zoomorphisms are connected with ancient mythology, history and literature.
