Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. Human erysipeloid (A26 according to ICD-10) – bacterial infection (Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae), is one of the commonest zoonoses in Europe, including Poland. However, the attention of human medicine devoted to this disease remains marginal, while clinical reports are not even sporadic. Material and methods and results. Epidemiological and clinical analysis of 34 cases of human erysipeloid (zoonotic infection caused by Gram (+) bacteria Erysipelothrix insidiosa) is presented, performed in the years 2005–2008 in Lublin Region, central-eastern Poland, (incidence: from 0.23–0.55/100,000 inhabitants). During this period, 400 human cases were registered in the whole of Poland (incidence – from 0.23–0.33/100,000). The obligation to report and register human erysipeloid in Poland in the years 1966–2008 was unique in the global epidemiology of zoonotic diseases. The results obtained indicate that the cases of human erysipeloid are considerably underestimated, at least in the Lublin Region. Human erysipeloid is still an important occupational risk factor in Poland.Key words: human erysipeloid, epidemiological situation in Poland, Lublin Region, epidemiological and clinical analysis
