Hyperleptinemia in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2010, Vol 23, Issue 4

Abstract

The discovery of leptin in 1994 resulted in a new look at the adipose tissue, not as a reservoir of energy only but also as a source of biologically active substances. Since then, studies on this peptide have been widely conducted. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the serum concentration of leptin in women with acute, first time ever ischemic stroke in the first 24 hours from the onset of clinical symptoms, and to correlate those levels with clinical and biochemical data.Material and methodsThe studied group consisted of women aged 60-85 with acute first time ever ischemic stroke episode but not having other serious diseases. However, the including criteria for this investigation were in addition at least one of the following: hypertension, diabetes or obesity. As the control group served women without stroke in medical history. Serum concentration of leptin was measured using RIA method. Lipid profile, insulin resistance markers and anthropometric parameters were also evaluated.ResultsWe found markedly higher values of leptin in sera of patients suffering from stroke when compared to the control group. Leptin significantly correlated with insulin-resistance marker (HOMA IR) and LDL-cholesterol. There was no correlation with BMI or BIA.ConclusionsOur results may suggest the possible role of leptin in acute phase of ischemic stroke. Serum concentration of leptin in ischemic stroke is mostly connected with insulin resistance
