Hypophysectomy Induced Histological Changes in Corpuscles of Stannius of a Freshwater Catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis

Journal Title: International Journal of Zoological Investigations - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

Freshwater catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis were collected and acclimatized. After acclimation they were divided into two groups A and B. Fishes from group A served as control whereas fishes from group B were hypophysectomized. Fishes from both groups were sacrificed at 1, 3, 5 and 10 days. Blood was collected and serum was separated after centrifugation. Corpuscles of Stannius were also fixed for histological study. Hypophysectomy resulted in marked hypocalcemia from day 3 to day 10. No change in histology of CS were recorded on day 1. However, on day 3 and 5, CS showed increased AF-positive granules in the cytoplasm with decrease in nuclear volume. On day 10 weak staining response of AF-positive cells were noticed with further decrease in nuclear volume.
