Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the distribution and abundance of fish species in the Osa River system – a right-bank tributary of the lower Vistula River. Additionally, the main environmental background and threats to fish fauna were also included. In 23 sites, a total of 4474 specimens of fish and lampreys representing 31 species were caught. The dominant reproductive group was psammophils (34,49%), and among it, the most numerous and the most common fish was gudgeon. Moreover, the abundance of spined loach, perch and stone loach was also high. In spite of long segments of natural streambed, especially in the middle of the system, the numbers of rheophilic species were low. The main reasons of the system’s poor fish fauna were pollution and isolation of stretches caused by dams. In the lower segment of the Osa River, connected to the lower Vistula, the highest number of fish species was noted, including Romanogobio belingi and Proterorhinus semilunaris.
