Abstract
This article is devoted to the study of the concept of "image of the author" in the modern German-language travel novel. It has been established that postmodern literature is capable of combining different genre subtypes, creating new ones or providing other forms of existing ones. The article gives a brief description of postmodern prose and one of its varieties – the modern novel. In the course of the research, the concept of "travel novel", its genre features and its typical forms of narration are defined. This genre is marked by a high degree of author's freedom, so depending on the author's attitude to what is portrayed, different versions of the narrative are used. Since the author's image is most fully disclosed in large epic forms, the concept of "image of the author" in the article is considered as an important unifying element of artistic creativity. The materials of this research involve the travel novels of the most popular representatives of modern German travel literature. The image of the author in the presented works is researched and the typical forms of narrative in the travel novel are revealed. The article also focuses on the concept of "author's picture of the world", "author's position", "author's consciousness", "author's reflection", "addresser of artistic text", which are integral components of the concept of "image of the author." During the study of the artistic works of the German authors-travelers, it has been established that the most commonly used form of the narrative is the first-person narrative, since it is the one that has the greatest degree of subjectivity and depicts the author's attitude to the image. In the perspective of further consideration and study of this topic, it is expedient to investigate and compare the typology of the narrator in the contemporary Ukrainian travel novel, to establish a common and distinct typology of the narrator in the 21st century travel novel.
